We have often sung worship songs, inviting the His Spirit into our presence. While I understand the premise of this, we must also realize that the Holy Spirit is already there. If you had a friend in your house would you call them on their cellphone and ask them to come in? Wouldn’t they look at you rather oddly? Yet that is what we are continually doing with His Spirit, even though we know in scripture it says He is with us.
Psalm 139:7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
Exodus 33:14 “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:!4
John 14:16 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever
Hebrews 13:5 “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'”
Matthew 28:20 “Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”
Zephaniah 3:17 “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”
Romans 8:38-39 “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
If we look in scripture the example set is not for God to come down here; he already did that when Jesus was born. His invitation is now for us to come up higher, to come to Him.
Revelation 4:1 After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”
I believe we would be more accurate, and therefore effective, to sing “I know you are already here, you are all around me. Make me more aware of your presence Lord”. I believe we all long for that sense of His weighty presence around us. Once you have tasted of it there is nothing better. But has He left? No. More honestly we have often gotten ourselves so busy that we forget to be aware of his presence.
I remember a time when my youngest child was very young. I was driving to the store and he had fallen asleep in his car seat. My mind was racing with all of the things I had to accomplish that day, and I completely forgot he was even in the car! I lost the awareness of his presence! I left the car and headed to the store. Of course when I realized what I had done I completely flipped out and scared myself half to death. That same fear of the Lord should fall on us when we realize we have gotten so busy that we have lost the awareness of His presence as well. (yep…totally preaching to myself right now – ouch) And yes life gets busy, I don’t deny that, but that is the very reason why we should switch our prayer and worship to what it is we really need to change in our life; a growing in our ever awareness of His presence.
I believe it is when we have grown in this area of being ever aware, not just analytically but in all practical purposes we have an ever awareness of Him surrounding us, that we will receive the invitation, “Come Up Higher”.
Come up higher so I can show you things you do not yet know. Come up higher so I can share things with you that will help those I have given you watch over. Come up higher so you can receive more details to the plans I have. Come up higher so I can look at you face to face, my friend, my child, my confidant, my love. Come up higher because I desire your company.
But first we must repent for our lackadaisical approach and awareness of his presence, and then extend the honor to His presence that He deserves, acknowledging He has been here all along. Then listen for His invitation, “Come Up Higher”
